Mechanisms of ischaemic stroke after chickenpox.

چکیده
Ischaemic stroke is a recognized complication of chickenpox. Seven cases of ischaemic stroke in children after recent varicella infection are discussed in detail to emphasise that there are several mechanisms by which this may arise.

Can mild head injury cause ischaemic stroke?
Five cases of ischaemic stroke preceded by minor head trauma in children are described. All patients had striatocapsular infarction. Three had no cerebrovascular abnormality; two had turbulent flow in the proximal middle cerebral artery. None of the patients had evidence of arterial dissection or any other risk factors for stroke. All made an excellent neurological recovery. Possible mechanisms...
متن کاملIschaemic stroke in children secondary to post varicella angiopathy.
Varicella in childhood is a self-limiting disease, which usually follows a benign course. However, complications, although rare, may have serious consequences. Ischaemic stroke secondary to post varicella angiopathy is a well-described complication and is estimated to account for up to a third of all strokes in infants. We present three previously healthy children who presented to our centre wi...
متن کاملHeadache as a surrogate marker of the molecular mechanisms implicated in progressing stroke.
The mechanism for headache in patients with acute ischaemic stroke are not completely understood. We analysed the relationship between headache and the early worsening of neurological symptoms in patients with acute ischaemic stroke, and we studied the possible biochemical mechanisms implicated. Headache at the onset of ischaemic stroke predicted progression with a sensitivity, specificity, and...
متن کاملEffects of aspirin on risk and severity of early recurrent stroke after transient ischaemic attack and ischaemic stroke: time-course analysis of randomised trials
BACKGROUND Aspirin is recommended for secondary prevention after transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or ischaemic stroke on the basis of trials showing a 13% reduction in long-term risk of recurrent stroke. However, the risk of major stroke is very high for only the first few days after TIA and minor ischaemic stroke, and observational studies show substantially greater benefits of early medical t...
متن کاملChickenpox and Risk of Stroke: A Self-controlled Case Series Analysis
BACKGROUND There is good evidence that respiratory and other infections that cause systemic inflammation can trigger strokes; however, the role of specific infections is unclear. Case reports have highlighted chickenpox as a possible risk factor for arterial ischemic stroke, particularly in children, but rigorous studies are needed to determine and quantify any increased risk. METHODS We used...
